About HSK Level 5

Understanding the exam requirements and format

The HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) Level 5 is an intermediate-advanced level standardized test of Chinese language proficiency. Successfully passing HSK 5 demonstrates that you can:

  • Read and understand Chinese newspapers and magazines
  • Comprehend Chinese films and TV programs
  • Deliver a full speech in Chinese
  • Express yourself fluently in Chinese

Exam Structure:

  • Listening Section: 30 minutes
  • Reading Section: 45 minutes
  • Writing Section: Composition and structured writing
  • Total Score: 300 points
  • Passing Score: 180 points

Vocabulary Requirement:

HSK Level 5 requires mastery of approximately 2,500 Chinese words, including:

  • 1,300 new words introduced at HSK 5
  • 1,200 words from previous HSK levels
  • 621 distinct new characters
